JOST Truck Stop #28: Interview KKS-U

JOST Communications Team

There is now another new development for the automatic coupling system KKS: the KKS-U. What it is all about is shown in the latest episode.

The KKS-U is an alternative installation variant that basically consists of three components: the wedge, the spiral spring, and the cable box. The newly designed wedge still contains the well-known KKS connector inside. It is mounted on the high-quality JOST kingpin and rotates with it when cornering. The spiral spring contains the air and electrical lines and guides them safely and reliably from the KKS connector to the trailer. In the KKS cable box, the air and electrical lines are safely stored and are fed back into the spiral spring during cornering.

Interview: KKS-U – JOST’s smart solution, also for existing trailers

Christian: Today we’ve brought some extra support into the studio. Joining me is Andreas Jakubin, Product Manager Advanced Products at JOST and responsible for the KKS-U. Hello Andreas!

Andreas: Hello Christian!

Christian: Andreas, what makes the KKS system special?

Andreas: KKS is a much-needed step forward in the logistics sector. Together with the kingpin, we simultaneously connect the electrical and air lines by dividing our system into three subsystems: the JOST fifth wheel with the KKS connector, the trailer component you see here, and the JOST E-Drive electric landing gear module. This means that air and electricity are immediately available on the trailer as soon as the kingpin is securely locked into the JOST fifth wheel. We make the work of truck drivers much easier and may even motivate others to obtain a truck driving license. At the same time, KKS improves safety, as the number of fall accidents is reduced because drivers no longer need to climb between the truck and the trailer. In addition, we reduce trailer losses, as our fifth wheel is equipped with a large number of sensors.

Christian: OK, that sounds quite revolutionary and like a major relief, especially for drivers. So what is special about the KKS-U?

Andreas: The KKS-U is another smart solution from JOST. It is suitable for all trailers that are already on the roads around the world. We bolt the kingpin with the wedge, the spiral spring with the electrical and air lines, and the cable box underneath the trailer. This allows us to retrofit the trailer, make it future-ready, and do so with minimal effort.

Christian: So that means you don’t need to buy a new trailer to use the KKS system. That’s very practical and makes KKS even more attractive for potential users.
